In choosing to study Psychology and Criminology at Aberystwyth University, you will be part of the long-established and reputable Aberystwyth Law Department and taught by talented and dedicated academics.
Psychology and Criminology combine to provide insights into the social and psychological perspectives of crime. We will study the brain, mind and behaviour to discover people’s motivation to commit crime and the sociocultural repercussions of their actions.
In studying Psychology and Criminology, you will acquire a wide range of skills, with the year in industry giving you additional insight, knowledge and experience employers look for.
What will I learn?
Psychology allows us insights into human behaviour. You will study the origins of the subject and how research has shaped and changed it and how it has developed into the modern science it is now.
The breakdown below will provide you with an illustration of what you may study during the four year degree scheme.
During your first year, you may:
- discover modules which cover topics such as social and individual behaviour, psychobiology and cognition, and research methods and historical issues in psychology
In your second year, you may:
- Tailor your degree to your interests and future career goals by choosing from our exciting range of specialist optional modules, such as:
- Health psychology
- Develop your understanding of the relationship between theory, research and criminal justice practice
- Psychology and Psychology of Counselling
- Coaching and Mentoring
- Sociological and psychological approaches to the study of criminal behaviour
- Criminal law and the workings of the criminal justice system
- basic research skills in criminology
In your third year you will undertake your work experience in an industry that is relative to this degree BSc Psychology and Criminology .
In your final year you may:
- Forensic Counselling
- Drugs and Behaviour
- Police, Policing and Society
- Youth Crime and Youth Justice
- Psychology and Crime
- Psychology of Humor
- Evolutionary Psychology
- You may also will apply your research and analytical skills by completing a research dissertation on a topic of your own choosing, with support from your supervisor.
