Biology has been mostly an experimental and an empirical science. However, most biological systems have many interacting units at the molecular or the organ level. These complicated structures can be studied as a whole only by building mathematical models of these systems and simulating these models on a computer. The simulations are used to improve the mathematical models and make predictions about the behavior of the system. The mathematical modeling and the simulation are the focus of our Quantitative Biology program.
