The programs in the Bachelor of Music degree are directed to those who intend to become professional musicians and music educators. The Bachelor of Music in Music Education offers both instrumental and choral/general tracks, in which students gain classroom experience through extensive, field-based teaching opportunities, beginning as early as the freshman year. This program is designed specifically to educate and provide certification for those intending to teach music in elementary or secondary schools in a public school system. The Music Education major may be personalized through Service-Learning programs, summer research, independent study, and the pursuit of a senior thesis or capstone experience.
Students within the music education major are held to a rigorous standard of musical proficiency, similar to that of students in the Applied Music major, with hour-long weekly lessons throughout their undergraduate career. This major provides effective preparation for immediate employment within the public school system or for further graduate study in music.
