History majors at the University of Delaware explore the past while acquiring skills to shape the future. Students learn how to make sense of the complex factors that have shaped human societies over time. They also acquire the skill of “historical empathy”-- the ability to understand the perspective and motivations of people across different times and cultures. Our history majors go on to successful careers in a wide range of fields because they know how to collect and analyze information, how to write clearly, and how to speak convincingly. The history major also prepares our students to live meaningful lives and to contribute to the greater good as informed citizens and stewards of our collective past and evolving future.
