OVERVIEW
Our one-year Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) prepares you to teach across the design and technology secondary (food, textiles and product design) school curriculum.
You’ll specialise in the subject you studied for your undergraduate degree (such as food, textiles or product design) but you’ll also learn practical skills across the full curriculum. You’ll explore ways to teach Design and Technology/Food and have the opportunity to work with a range of materials.
Studying topics in textiles, electronics, food, and product design you’ll focus on creating the projects you might teach your class. Past projects include creating a pencil case with LEDs, building a basic circuit, and using a 3D printer to print textiles.
Through these practical workshops, you’ll explore some of the issues students might have, such as using complex machinery or working with soldering irons. You’ll also look at ways to make sure you’re imparting educational knowledge through each project, such as electronic calculations or weaves of fabric.
You may have a number of sessions to develop your subject knowledge from guest lecturers. Past guests include colleagues from exam boards, Heads of Faculty, DATA Challenge and Game Changer.
When you’re at Manchester Met, you’ll mainly study with your PGCE Design and Technology (D&T) group. You’ll consider how to plan lessons, reflect on your planning, learn how research can develop your teaching practice, and look at ways to develop your teacher persona.
You won’t simply learn computer-aided manufacturing or how to use a laser cutter though. You’ll spend at least 120 days on placements in a variety of schools, gradually increasing your involvement to become an expert practitioner.
This PGCE is available via University led and School Direct routes.
CAREER PROSPECTS
Most of our graduates go on to work as design and technology teachers in secondary schools.
The PGCE programme provides you with 60 masters' level credits when you graduate. You could put these towards a masters degree to help you develop your career in the field of education including our new MTeach masters specifically designed for Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs).
