The Master of Fine Arts is the terminal degree in studio art.
The University of Tennessee MFA Studio Art program is nationally recognized and respected. The students who accept our invitation to study with us are well served. We are an equal opportunity/inclusive community. Applicants are considered for Graduate Teaching Assistantships with a full tuition waiver, stipend, and health benefits. Outstanding applicants are nominated for additional fellowships.
At the graduate level, UT offers an MFA program with a focus on sculptural work. The MFA degree is a 3-year program that encourages advanced aesthetic and conceptual development through self-directed exploration. Professional dialogue, discussion, and critical thinking are at the core of this program. Independent studio work is balanced with an intensive investigation of critical, conceptual and historical issues. Graduate students study with 3D faculty in Ceramics and Sculpture and receive critiques from the School of Art faculty and visiting artists.
Academic Standards
- First-year evaluation: At the end of the first two semesters in residence, the student must present a portfolio for evaluation by the faculty and receive permission to continue in the program.
- Second-year evaluation: With completion of all coursework, the student must present work for evaluation by the faculty and receive permission to register for Project in Lieu of Thesis.
- If, in a review by the student’s major area faculty, the student’s progress is deemed insufficient, the faculty may recommend a work period without advancement toward the degree, probation with specific goals set for a specific time, or dismissal.

為來自中國的學(xué)生設(shè)計(jì) Applicants must have obtained a bachelor’s degree from a college or university accredited by the appropriate regional accrediting agency, recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEEA). A non-U.S.?degree must be equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from the United States and must be granted by a recognized or accredited foreign institution. United States degree holders must have earned a minimum of 2.7 out of a possible 4.0 GPA or a minimum of 3.0 during the senior year of undergraduate study. If you have completed previous graduate coursework, you must have earned a minimum of 3.0 out of a possible 4.0 GPA. Minimum score requirements for admission to the Graduate School are: a total score of 80 on the internet-based TOEFL (iBT), a 6.5 overall band score on the IELTS.
