Both thesis and project options are available for the major in plant sciences, each guided by a graduate committee consisting of the major professor and two or more other faculty members. Studies are possible across a wide variety of crop commodities, including fruits, vegetables, weeds, cereals, grains, turfgrass, ornamental plants, and public horticulture. Plant sciences students can undertake research to address challenges related to plant protection, molecular biology, breeding, genetics, biotechnology, physiology, ecology, culture, and management. Students must select a formal concentration as a focus of study.
The public horticulture concentration is intended for students interested in professional careers which promote horticulture and emphasize people and their education and enjoyment of plants. So, if you enjoy working with plants and equally enjoy working with people and inspiring their use and enjoyment of plants, public horticulture may be a great career path for you. In addition to gaining knowledge and expertise in the areas of horticulture and plant sciences, students are also prepared in the areas of writing, speaking, photography, teaching, and working with people.
What Can I Do with this Concentration?
- Display and preservation of plants for the public enjoyment, such as in botanical gardens, conservatories and arboreta
- Horticulture therapist, using plants to enhance human well-being with garden therapy
- Extension agent, teacher, educational director or program coordinator
- Plant collections manager
- Professional garden writer/editor or publication manager for garden publications
- Curator for public gardens, parks, zoos, and greenways
- City or urban horticulturist
- Estate gardener or an urban forester
