Chemistry is the study of matter and energy in the universe. The three Pillars of Science are Matter, Life and the Mind. Chemistry is so unique that it’s fundamental to the study of all other basic sciences. It is a gateway to a broad range of career opportunities. As a hands-on major, you will conduct your own experiments in the lab and enjoy many undergraduate research opportunities instead of spending all of your time in a lecture hall.
The Bachelor of Science degree is available to students who intend to pursue graduate study in chemistry as well as careers in chemistry and the sciences. Students completing the requirements listed below will receive a degree certification from the American Chemical Society.
Careers for Chemistry Majors
After graduating from the UT Chemistry Undergraduate Program, you can:
- Enter the work force as chemists in industry and government
- Traditional jobs: synthetic chemist, medicinal chemist, polymer chemist, materials scientist, analytical chemist, geochemist, and the like. With specific concentration of study, you may also become a cement chemist, packing technologist, ethnobotanist, paleoclimatologist, astrobiologist, forensic scientist, or fragrance formulator.
- Non-traditional jobs: science writers, environmental and patent attorneys, technical writers, software designers, restaurant test kitchen researchers, information specialists, government policy analysts, etc.
- Proceed into careers as secondary school teachers: VolsTeach program.
- Gain admission into one of the best chemistry graduate programs in the country.
- Pursue studies in the health professions and law.
