The Department of Modern Foreign Languages & Literatures develops language proficiency to foster critical thinking through literary, cinematic, and linguistic analysis and hence to establish incisive perspectives on cultures and civilizations, including our own. The many faculty and student accomplishments in research, teaching, and service to the community build a solid foundation for exciting professional futures by informed, engaged citizens.
Students pursuing a major in Modern Foreign Languages and Literatures who wish to prepare for careers in international business may complete a special concentration in Chinese, French and Francophone Studies, German, Hispanic Studies, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese or Russian Studies. The concentration offers a professional emphasis in international business, international retail merchandising, or international agricultural economics, and some form of practical experience related to the concentration.
Students interested in the language and world business program should contact the department of Modern Foreign Languages and Literatures as early as possible in their college careers.
We offer a wide range of classes in Chinese, from beginning to advanced. The teaching adopts a communicative approach, emphasizing constant aural-oral interaction in the classroom. Various other departments offer courses with a focus on topics such as Chinese linguistics, history, politics, religion, art and more, as part of the Chinese Minor, as well as the Language and World Business Program with a concentration in Chinese. The Confucius Institute at UT also offers non-credit courses, such as Business Chinese.
Why Study Chinese?
China, the world's most populous country, is often seen as a country of superlatives. With written records stretching back more than 4000 years, Chinese language and culture are amongst the world's oldest. In recent decades, the country has become the world's manufacturing powerhouse and fastest-growing consumer market, and is on a path to becoming the world's biggest economy. The growing influence that China enjoys on the international scene makes a knowledge of its language and culture an increasingly valuable skill that can provide access and opportunities in areas as diverse as business, government and international relations, information technology, tourism, education, translation, and more.
