Are you passionate about issues that impact the community? Interested in learning about Australian Indigenous perspectives and ways of thinking?
Throughout the Bachelor of Human Services (Community Development and Indigenous Studies) you will be challenged to critically analyse and debate contemporary issues that affect communities, such as:
- ethics and social welfare
- environment
- gender and racial equality
- social justice, and
- the Law.
Our Indigenous staff will enable you to develop the ability to work with and within Indigenous communities in culturally appropriate and effective ways.
Practical experience
You will gain valuable experience in diverse community and welfare settings by completing a minimum of 400 hours of professional experience placements. Students will be required to provide the following to USQ:
- current Australian Federal Police Criminal History Check Certificate
- a current Blue Card from the Queensland Government Commission for Children and Young People and Young Guardian
- immunisations may be required in order to attend particular settings.
Professional accreditation
The Bachelor of Human Services (Community Development and Indigenous Studies) is accredited with the Australian Community Workers Association (ACWA). If you successfully complete a minimum of 400 hours of professional placement (fieldwork) courses you will be eligible to apply for ACWA accreditation. You will need to attend a mandatory 3-day residential school as part of the ACWA accreditation requirement.
Career outcomes
Graduates can work as community development officers, counsellors or human service professionals in government and community settings, social care institutions, or organisations that design and offer programs and services to Indigenous communities.

Applications are based on comparisons with Australian Year 12 level examinations. English Language Requirements: IELTS (Academic only) score of 6.0 (or better) (no component lower than 5.5); TOEFL (paper based) score of 550 (or better) (with a minimum Test of Written English Score of TWE 4.5); TOEFL (electronic or computer based) score of 213 (or better) (with essay rating of at least 4.5); TOEFL (internet based) score of 80 (or better) (with 19 minimum in all bands); Pearson (PTE Academic) score of 50 (or better) (with no communicative score less than 50); Cambridge English: First (FCE)/ B2 First with a score of 169 or above. No less than 162 in each skill.
