Biomedical Engineering at UB is a vibrant, growing department that spans the Schools of Engineering & Medicine/Biomedical Sciences. BME offers a Master of Science (MS) degree and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree. The MS program is designed to provide a fundamental/research-oriented program of advanced study for students wishing to enhance their knowledge and understanding within a specialized discipline. The PhD degree provides an opportunity for students to pursue a program of research in a specialized area and to develop a dissertation that embodies the results of original research.
If you are looking to acquire research experience and formal training in Biomedical Engineering fundamentals at an advanced level through graduate coursework, then our Master's of Science (MS) in Biomedical Engineering may be the place for you.
Philosophy
Master's program is designed to engage you in research that interests you. Biomedical Engineering is a multi-faceted field and we believe that you are best served by being able to focus on the areas of interest most relevant to your desired career paths.
We strive to create an individualized experience for each student by allowing them to pick your own course path and chose the topic of their thesis based on what interests you most in Biomedical Engineering.
All of our students work with a faculty advisor who assists you in course selection, thesis guidance, and allows you the opportunity to participate in hands-on laboratory research in their state-of-the-art facilities.
Our program is designed to suit students who enter with a research focus in mind, but the flexibility we offer in course selection allows you the opportunity to explore a variety of topics before narrowing into your selection, where you are then able to begin advanced research on your chosen topics.
The MS degree in Biomedical Engineering positions you to:
- Become more competitive for laboratory positions in academia or industry
- Strengthen your skills and knowledge base for Medical or Dental school
- Continue in a doctoral program in Biomedical Engineering or other engineering and biomedical fields
Research Opportunities
Some of our MS students have chosen research topics in the following areas:
- Biomaterials
- Biomechanics in Orthopedics
- Cerebrovascular Hemodynamics and Biology
- Mechanisms of intracranial aneurysm initiation and progression
