Having occupied a state-of-the-art building, merged the Departments of Chemistry and Medicinal Chemistry, and added several recent faculty, the research activity of the medicinal chemistry program is very energized. As a moderately large graduate program, we have the critical mass for the state-of-the-art instrumentation required for modern research in chemistry. Still, the program is sufficiently small to have a nurturing and supportive environment for all the students.
Degree Requirements
A minimum of 30 credit hours are required for the MS degree.
Prerequisites and admission procedures for the MS in Medicinal Chemistry program are identical to the MS in Chemistry program. A BS in Chemistry is an optimal prerequisite, but applicants with bachelor’s degrees in pharmacy, pharmaceutical sciences or biological sciences may qualify if their background in the chemical sciences is of sufficient scope and depth. There are no entrance examination requirements for students entering the MS in Medicinal Chemistry program.
COURSEWORK AND THESIS DEFENSE
Of the 30 total required credit hours, students must take six courses (18 credits). From these, three courses must be core courses and three chosen from a specified list of electives. The remaining 12 credit hours are devoted to creative research. At the conclusion of the work, a thesis must be written and orally defended before the student’s research committee of at least two members of the faculty.

Most such degrees will be four or more years in length; UB recognizes some three-year degrees, but not all; A B-grade (GPA of 3.0) or higher from your bachelor's degree (or equivalent) courses. Grade point averages from non-U.S. universities will be evaluated by UB's Office of International Admissions. English Language Requirements: The minimum score of TOEFL IBT is 79, the minimum score TOEFL PBT is 550, the minimum score of IELTS is 6.5, the minimum score of PTE is 55, the minimum score of Cambridge English Proficiency (CPE) 185, the minimum score of Cambridge English Advanced (CAE) 185.
