The MA in Sociology prepares students for careers in teaching, research, industry, government or non-profit organizations, as well as to pursue a doctoral degree.
The MA degree is based on instruction in graduate courses and original scholarship in the form of a Master’s paper written under the supervision of at least two regular Department faculty. A minimum of 30 credit hours of Master’s level courses are required, including 9 credit hours of mandatory coursework:
- Sociological Theory, SOC 567
- Social Research Methods, SOC 606
- Social Statistics, SOC 504
Students studying for their MA usually complete their program of study within two years. MA students who wish to continue in our PhD program do not continue automatically; they must apply for readmission to the PhD program.

為來自中國的學(xué)生設(shè)計 Applicants must have a bachelor's degree (or higher) or the equivalent from an accredited/government recognized college or university. Most such degrees will be four or more years in length; UB recognizes some three-year degrees, but not all; A B-grade (GPA of 3.0) or higher from your bachelor's degree (or equivalent) courses. Grade point averages from non-U.S. universities will be evaluated by UB's Office of International Admissions. English Language Requirements: The minimum score of TOEFL IBT is 79, the minimum score TOEFL PBT is 550, the minimum score of IELTS is 6.5, the minimum score of PTE is 55, the minimum score of Cambridge English Proficiency (CPE) 185, the minimum score of Cambridge English Advanced (CAE) 185.
