Why study Medical Technology BS at UB?
Medical technology, also known as clinical laboratory science, provides the training necessary to perform laboratory based tests used by physicians to diagnose, treat and prevent disease. It is a field of applied biology and chemistry and is appropriate for students interested in the delivery of health-care services. The course of study is interdisciplinary, drawing heavily upon the resources of both the natural sciences and the health sciences faculties. Once admitted into the program, students spend three academic semesters at the university taking program courses covering the areas of biochemistry, immunology, instrumentation, clinical chemistry, microbiology, blood banking, hematology, coagulation, parasitology, mycology, urinalysis, biomolecular techniques, medical genetics, and management. The last semester of the senior year is spent rotating through hospital laboratories affiliated hospitals with the program.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of all degree requirements, the student will have knowledge to:
- Perform, evaluate, and assure the accuracy and validity of lab test results
- Describe the principles, methodologies, and lab performance of Clinical Chemistry and Microbiology, Immunology, Hematology/Hemostasis, Immunohematology/Transfusions, Urine and Body Fluid Analysis, Molecular Diagnostics and Lab Operations
- Demonstrate effective communication skills to serve patients
- Direct and supervise clinical laboratory resources and operations
- Describe the principles and practices of clinical study design and dissemination of results
Program Outcomes: UB BS Medical Technology graduates have achieved:
- Greater than 90% first time pass rate on national certification examinations, exceeding the national average
- Greater than 93% placement rates for employment in the lab and related fields
- Greater than 90% graduation rate (less than 10% attrition rate) for students in the final two years of the UB MT program
Career Outlook
Medical Technology employment opportunities are extremely strong in both the public and private sectors. The 2015 report from the US Bureau of Labor and Statistics indicates that more than 50,000 jobs are available and a 16% job growth rate (much faster than average) will be consistent through 2024. The median salary is $50,500 nationwide and $66,000 in New York State.
Career choices are extremely varied:

- Instrument manufacturers
- Laboratory management
- Management or regulatory affairs
- Professional school: Medical, dental, chiropractic, optometry, veterinary, physician's assistant

You should feel confident applying to UB if you have an above-average academic record and have taken challenging courses in high school to help prepare you to be successful at university. UB uses a 4.0 grading scale and we expect students applying here to have the equivalent of a 3.0 on that scale. That is the same as a grade of B or 83 on a 100-point scale. English Language Scores: The minimum score of TOEFL IBT is 70, the minimum score TOEFL PBT is 523, the minimum score of IELTS is 6.0, the minimum score of PTE is 50, CAEL 70, CanTEST 4.5, Cambridge English Proficiency (CPE) score 185; Cambridge English Advanced (CAE) score 185, IB Higher Level English a Literature 4, IB Higher Level English a Language and Literature 4.
