Why study Studio Art BA - Photography Concentration at UB?
The study of art opens the mind to a wealth of possibilities and allows students to discover their unique skills. Artists and designers produce visual expressions of culture that investigate and redefine our world. The art program prepares students for the real world practice of art and design.
Photography is a multifaceted visual, lens-based, discipline. Whether images emanate from darkroom or software; from view camera, Holga, DSLR or cell phone, the photography curriculum at UB is conceptually driven, promoting experimentation and interdisciplinary exploration. Students in the photography concentration will be exploratory creators, motivated and independent young artists open to multiple possibilities of expression. Informed by historical development, contemporary concerns and anticipating the future of photography, students will engage in a critical analysis of form, intention and meaning.
The BA degree focuses on photography within a broad program of general studies that allows the student to pursue a minor or double major in another program.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of all requirements, the student will have knowledge of:
- A broad, applied knowledge of fundamental strategies, and methods of contemporary art-making and photography.
- A facility with a specific set of tools and/or techniques of photographic production.
- How to deepen their creative intellect and artistic problem-solving skills.
- How to acquire professional experience to equip them for professional practice and/or advanced study in their field.
- How to acquire critical discursive skills, for presenting their work, explaining their concepts and critically engaging the work of others.
- How to acquire analytical skills to enable them to access (latent and manifest) meanings in visual images, developing their visual literacy.
- How to acquire a solid understanding of the roles of art and visual culture in a particular historical period and/or world culture.

UB Art alumni can qualify for a range of professions that involve creative problem solving, critical thinking, and an understanding of cultural context, including art galleries, museums, alternative spaces, and auction houses.
Our alumni include many artists who have national and international reputations via their acclaimed exhibitions, commissions, and awards. Alumni have also had great success in education, becoming professors or lecturers at leading colleges and universities or teachers at community colleges and secondary schools. In addition, alumni have entered a range of professions in places such as art galleries, museums, alternative art spaces, auction houses, design and advertising firms, and government agencies for culture as directors, designers, curators, proprietors, installers, and art handlers, as well as finding themselves in conservation, fabrication, fund raising, and community outreach programming.
