Why study Statistics BA at UB?
All of the faculty in the Department of Biostatistics have extensive experience working with real data through their research and interdisciplinary collaborations and their experiences are brought into the classroom. Thus students are not only exposed to statistical theory, but how to apply the theory to real-world problems, providing students insight beyond what an ordinary textbook offers. Our goal is to prepare students for a career in applied statistics or continuation of their education in pursuit of an advanced degree.
Learning Outcomes
Students completing the statistics major are expected to have demonstrated knowledge of the following:
- An understanding of probability theory, its application to everyday problems and the important role probability plays in data analysis and decision making
- The ability to identify the proper statistical technique needed for the analysis of data in a variety of contexts
- How to design data collection experiments in a way that allows for optimal decision making while being subject to real-world constraint
Career Outlook
There is, and will continue to be, a growing demand for statisticians and data analysts over the next two decades. In addition to data oriented careers in industry, graduates can choose to further their education through graduate study in pursuit of a Master’s degree or Ph.D. in applied or theoretical statistics. A major in statistics well prepares students for a variety of careers in areas such as the health sciences, engineering, actuary science, business analytics, economics, law, and data science.
