Why study Social Sciences Interdisciplinary BA - International Studies Concentration at UB?
The SSC/International Studies major is designed for students who want to develop a global understanding of the world today. The major is rooted in the belief that significant language competence is fundamental to international competence and that interdisciplinary study provides a deeper understanding of the world’s events. The major combines introductory surveys of world history and international politics with a focused understanding of a particular geographic region: Europe, Latin America, Asia or Africa and the Middle East. Students may be studying the history, politics, culture or religion in their exploration of the chosen region.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this concentration students will:
- Understand aspects of the people, forces and ideas that have shaped world development: nationalism, imperialism, power diplomacy, ideological conflict; comparative political systems
- Understand contemporary and historical international relations
- Have advanced, non-English language competency associated with completion of the third year of language study at UB
- Understand economic principles, globalization of economic systems, the interrelation of economic, spatial, and political factors in modernization and development
- Understand core concepts in international relations, international law, human rights, regional and spatial aspects of economic development, international trade from two disciplinary perspectives
- Understand multiple aspects of recent economic, political, commercial development of a world region: modern Europe, Latin America, Asia or Africa and the Middle East
Career Outlook
Students who graduate from the Social Sciences Interdisciplinary/International Studies major are prepared to work in not-for-profit agencies, law enforcement, government and the military. Students have reported obtaining employment with the Ethiopian Management Institute, SOS International Medical and Travel Security, International Rescue Committee, U.S Immigration and Naturalization Services and Academic Travel Abroad.
The interdisciplinary structure of the major prepares students to go on to advanced study in international relations, political science, and law school. Students have gone on to advanced studies at SUNY Albany, American Military University, SUNY Buffalo and University of Central Florida.

為來自中國的學(xué)生設(shè)計 Admission to UB’s freshman class is selective and is based in part on the quality of your secondary school academic record and the number of spaces available in the class. You should feel confident applying to UB if you have an above-average academic record and have taken challenging courses in high school to help prepare you to be successful at university. UB uses a 4.0 grading scale and we expect students applying here to have the equivalent of a 3.0 on that scale. That is the same as a grade of B or 83 on a 100-point scale. English Language Scores: The minimum score of TOEFL IBT is 70, the minimum score TOEFL PBT is 523, the minimum score of IELTS is 6.0, the minimum score of PTE is 50, CAEL 70, CanTEST 4.5, Cambridge English Proficiency (CPE) score 185; Cambridge English Advanced (CAE) score 185, IB Higher Level English a Literature 4, IB Higher Level English a Language and Literature 4.
