Why study Social Science Interdisciplinary BA - Cognitive Science Concentration at UB?
Cognitive Science is one of six concentration areas in the Social Sciences Interdisciplinary major. It is designed for students interested in using an interdisciplinary approach to study the cognitive aspects of such fields as philosophy, artificial intelligence, cognitive psychology, and computational linguistics. It is the study of how the mind works. It investigates thought and consciousness, the senses and emotions, the structure of language, cultural patterns, neural organization, and the computational analogs of mental processes. It examines how these areas interact, how they develop in the growing human, and how they appear in other animals.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this concentration students will be able to:
- understand several social scientific approaches to cognitive science
- identify how cognition changes through the life cycle
- identify and use computational models of human cognition and perception processes
- apply symbolic and connectionist methods and the theory of computation
- understand cognition apart from physiological implementation. They will identify and use abstract principles of thought
- identify language phenomena at the elementary physiological level through its abstract characterization
- understand how the brain implements thought, sensation, perception and consciousness
- identify symbolic information systems across disciplines and manipulate traditional information processing approaches
Career Outlook
The interdisciplinary structure of the major prepares students to go on to graduate work in psychology, cognitive science or linguistics. Students who have combined the major with extra course work in the hard sciences have used the major in preparation for physician assistant, medical or dental school.
