Why study Linguistics BA - Language, Society, and Communication Concentration at UB?
The Language, Society, and Communication track prepares students for careers in the media, public relations, business, and editing. Majors explore the central role that language plays in society, social interaction, and communication. Required courses focus on basic issues of the structure and use of language. Electives focus on specific social and cultural contexts in America and other countries, and on methods for studying the use and interpretation of language in distinctive social contexts.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of all requirements, the student will have knowledge of:
- Core concepts: Students will comprehend the core concepts of linguistics, as well as the basic literature that assumes such concepts.
- Cognitive/social aspects of language: Students will achieve an awareness of language in its broader cognitive and social context.
- Language diversity awareness: Students will develop an awareness of linguistic diversity and variability.
- Critical thinking: Students will master the ability to construct arguments for choosing between alternative analyses of linguistic phenomena and to identify relevant data bearing on the analyses.
- Problem solving: Students will be able to analyze linguistic data from English or other languages and to construct descriptions of particular linguistic phenomena in particular languages.
- Communication skills: Students will attain the skills necessary to prepare written and oral presentations on linguistic topics.
Career Outlook
Students completing a BA have gone on to law school, medical school, speech and hearing sciences, library sciences, as well as done graduate work within theoretical and applied linguistics. They have also found employment teaching English in countries such as France, Thailand, Korea, Japan, and China and in the fields of publishing, literacy development, marketing, public service organizations, and language technology. Careers open to students with linguistics degrees include:

為來自中國的學(xué)生設(shè)計(jì) Admission to UB’s freshman class is selective and is based in part on the quality of your secondary school academic record and the number of spaces available in the class. You should feel confident applying to UB if you have an above-average academic record and have taken challenging courses in high school to help prepare you to be successful at university. UB uses a 4.0 grading scale and we expect students applying here to have the equivalent of a 3.0 on that scale. That is the same as a grade of B or 83 on a 100-point scale. English Language Scores: The minimum score of TOEFL IBT is 70, the minimum score TOEFL PBT is 523, the minimum score of IELTS is 6.0, the minimum score of PTE is 50, CAEL 70, CanTEST 4.5, Cambridge English Proficiency (CPE) score 185; Cambridge English Advanced (CAE) score 185, IB Higher Level English a Literature 4, IB Higher Level English a Language and Literature 4.
