The BA/MS program is a research-intensive combined degree program that provides an accelerated path to the Master of Science degree in Biological Sciences. Students enrolled in the program integrate laboratory and classroom learning experiences. Normally six years are needed to achieve both degrees (four years for the BA and two additional years for the MS). The combined program can be completed in five years. The BA degree is conferred after the fourth year, and the MS degree is conferred upon completion of the program. BA/MS graduates will be prepared for entry into the research workforce or for further PhD level education in the biological sciences or related fields.
Learning Outcomes
Students will develop a broad background in the biological sciences and achieve an understanding and appreciation of basic biological concepts and principles. They will become proficient in five broad areas of biology: evolutionary biology, cell biology, physiology, biochemistry, and genetics. In addition, students will learn research skills including laboratory procedures, experimental design, and data analysis and interpretation.
Career Outlook
A degree in Biological Sciences is the gateway to a wide variety of careers. The curriculum is ideal preparation for entry into the health industry – including medicine, dentistry, optometry, medical technical fields, pharmacy, and veterinary medicine – as well as research careers in fields as diverse as ecology, evolution, neuroscience, cell biology, genetics, molecular biology, and epidemiology. Research careers are prominent at colleges, universities, government agencies (e.g. EPA, CDC, and NIH), pharmaceutical companies, and the biotech industry. The diversity of courses in Biological Sciences also provides a solid foundation for teaching at the secondary, community college, and four-year college levels, as well as for science-focused careers in law, journalism, public policy, and the non-profit sector.

You should feel confident applying to UB if you have an above-average academic record and have taken challenging courses in high school to help prepare you to be successful at university. UB uses a 4.0 grading scale and we expect students applying here to have the equivalent of a 3.0 on that scale. That is the same as a grade of B or 83 on a 100-point scale. English Language Scores: The minimum score of TOEFL IBT is 70, the minimum score TOEFL PBT is 523, the minimum score of IELTS is 6.0, the minimum score of PTE is 50, CAEL 70, CanTEST 4.5, Cambridge English Proficiency (CPE) score 185; Cambridge English Advanced (CAE) score 185, IB Higher Level English a Literature 4, IB Higher Level English a Language and Literature 4.
