The Human Services & Social Justice Program (HSSJ) at The George Washington University is one of the most innovative programs of its kind devoted to developing practical, academic skills for use in diverse service settings. At the crossroads of sociology and psychology, the program provides students with opportunities to apply concepts learned in the classroom to contemporary societal problems and assume effective roles in not-for-profit agencies serving people and communities in need.
We build upon a foundation of empathy, concern for others, and a commitment to social justice that our students bring to the program by encouraging high academic and ethical standards, providing enabling knowledge, and affording service-learning opportunities that enhance tangible impacts and supplement classroom learning.
We develop our students through an emphasis on scholarly research, reflective learning, intellectual challenges, and strong partnerships with the faculty and staff of the program. This active mentoring of students encourages acquiring life-long learning habits, the incorporation of ethics, and the development of a mature identity as a helping professional who is a critical element in the link between the people and society in building communities.
Achievement of a minimum grade of C- in all courses that count toward the degree.
