MA requires a minimum of 30 graduate credit hours including 24 credit hours of coursework (8 courses) within the department. Reading proficiency in one foreign language is required. An exam, project, or thesis is required.
- F512 Survey of Folklore
- F516 Folklore Theory in Practice
- F517 History of Folklore Study or F525 Readings in Ethnography
- F523 Fieldwork in Folklore
- Three additional approved courses in the department that fall in the Form, Area, or Theory categories (one course for each category)
- One approved Ethnomusicology course*
*Must be chosen from the following list: E522 Study of Ethnomusicology, E529 Musical Cultures as Systems of Meaning, or E714 Paradigms of Ethnomusicology
Graduates (MA and PhDs) of the department are consistently placed in significant professional positions in academia as well as in the public and private spheres.
