The Master of Arts in French Instruction (MAFI) degree is designed for graduate students who are preparing for a career in teaching French at the high school level or at small colleges.
You can tailor the M.A. coursework to your particular needs and interests. In this two-year program, the M.A. in French Instruction includes work in French language, literature, civilization, pedagogy, and applied linguistics.
The MAFI degree does not include state teacher certification. If you would like information on how to combine a certification program with the MAFI, you should consult with an advisor in the School of Education.
M.A. degree requirements in French Instruction (MAFI)
30 credit hours of graduate coursework, at least 20 of which must be in FRIT-F
Required coursework: F572, F573, and F580, plus one course in French Linguistics, one in pedagogy/acquisition, and two in French/Francophone Studies
Oral proficiency in French as demonstrated by an interview at the end of the first year
Written exams in the following two areas (one essay must be written in French):
- Applied French Linguistics
- Foreign language methodology/second language acquisition
Oral exam in Francophone civilization or literature
*No thesis is required for the M.A. in French Instruction
