Our eminent Russian and East European Studies Institute, established in 1958, continue to be a leader in studying this vital region. Its graduates include former U.S. Secretary of Defense Bob Gates. Other graduates become intelligence and foreign area officers for the U.S. military. They occupy key positions in the State Department, the GAO, and the FBI, as well as serving on congressional staffs. They are employed by leading global consultancies and companies like McKinsey and Co. and Motorola. They work for NGOs like the Red Cross and Catholic Relief Agencies. And they go on to pursue doctorates and hold posts at think tanks and universities. In other words, an advanced degree from REEI can take you in many directions.
REEI MA/MSSI – 54 credit hours
Required Courses (6 credits)
REEI R600 Pro seminar in REEI Area Studies (3 cr)
REEI R601 Interdisciplinary Colloquium in REEI (3 cr)
Area Studies (18 credits)
4 courses (3 credits each) from area studies offering, one each from:
Social Science
Historical/Geographical
Socio cultural
Literature
2 courses in the area of concentration (3 cr each): Security Studies
M.A. Essay and examination
M.A. Essay Procedures and Requirements
Language Requirements
Oral Proficiency Examination
M.I.S. Requirements
30 credit hours of graduate courses
Additional Requirements
Courses must be passed with a minimum of a B average and must be area-related. Essay committee should consist of REEI and SLIS professors.
At least 21 credit hours must be taken in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Courses should be selected in consultation with the REEI Academic Advisor.
