The Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences advances innovative basic and applied research in communication sciences and speech and hearing disorders. It serves the community with clinical services, providing students with professional training and preparing them for clinical practice.
When pursuing a B.S. degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences you can work with faculty members who have extensive research experience in the field. Experience with research is highly recommended for those Speech and Hearing Sciences majors who would like to earn their Ph.D. and become researchers or professors as a career goal. The department includes 14 faculty research labs where you have the opportunity to gain experience in speech perception, language development, voice disorders, bilingual language, and audiology.
Coursework
Your starting point with the Speech and Hearing Sciences Major is language study and one or more introductory courses, including:
- SPHS-S 106 Hearing Science: An Overview
- SPHS-S 108 Speech and Language Sciences: An Overview
- SPHS-S 111 Introduction to Phonetics for Speech and Hearing Sciences
Tracks and concentrations
