Functional Genomics at NC State encompasses gene discovery, gene expression, protein and nucleic acid structure and function, gene and gene product interactions, and genomic approaches to breeding and comparative studies relevant to ecology and evolutionary biology. Students selecting Functional Genomics will focus on one or more of these areas.
Academic preparation will start with a general background in Genomic Sciences including classes in Bioinformatics, Genetics, Biochemistry and Statistics. A wide variety of advanced courses are offered and will be chosen depending on the specific focus of the student.

ST 590A: Intro. Bioinformatics (3 cr) GN 735: Functional Genomics (3 cr) GN 701: Molecular Genetics or BCH 703 Macromolecular Synthesis and Regulation (3 cr) PP 610: Genomics Journal Club (1 credit, to be taken twice) GN 850: Professionalism and Ethics
Functional Genomics Core (18 credits)
ST 511: Experimental Statistics I (3 cr) GN 702: Cellular and Developmental Genetics or BCH 705: Molecular Biology of the Cell (3 cr) GN 703: Population & Quantitative Genetics or BCH 701: Macromolecular Structure (3 cr) FG Category I Electives* (9 cr) Thesis Research/Electives (6cr)
* Because of university requirements, FG Category I Electives can not be chosen from ST 590C, CSC 530, ST 512, ST 501, or ST 502. These courses can be taken as additional electives beyond the minimum 36 cr requirement, however.
