Teachers can have a great impact on the social, personal, and intellectual development of individuals. Their influence stems from a love of learning; a talent for awakening students to new modes of thinking; an understanding of the human development process; and professional skills. A general description of teacher work activities includes: planning courses, instructing students; interacting with parents and administration; and keeping up with developments in the field. The Teacher Education Option provides students with a BA in English and prepares its graduates to teach English on the secondary level (grades 7-12). Students take 39 hours of English and 31 hours of Professional Education courses. Specialized education courses include: Teaching Writing, Introduction to Teaching Humanities & Social Sciences, Classroom Assessment, Educational Psychology, Literacy in the US, Applied Criticism, Language and Writing, Methods in Teaching English, and Student Teaching in English.
