The MSc in Development Economics provides training in the application of economic principles to the problems of international development. While providing deep insight into the problems faced by contemporary developing economies, the programme discusses the wide range of policies aimed at overcoming economic underdevelopment.
Overview
The programme combines classical approaches to understanding the process of development with modern explanations, which involve research into social organisation and psychology. It scrutinises development through the lens of social norms and interactions, which in traditional societies are as strong as market forces themselves. The programme trains highly qualified professionals to pursue careers in national and international organisations that foster economic development. It strongly capitalizes on the School’s unique decades-long research expertise in the area.
All of our MSc degrees equip you with a range of quantitative and analytical skills, and the ability to communicate complex economic concepts in a clear and concise style. Our programmes not only offer a stimulating education in economic theory, but also develop your ability to apply economic knowledge, analytical tools and skills to a range of national and international problems in the areas of finance, development, agriculture and the environment.
Teaching and assessment
Assessment is through a wide variety of methods including seminar presentations, extended essays, short projects, in-course tests, examinations, and the dissertation.
Programme aims
The programme aims to:
- To provide a stimulating education in the principles of Development Economics and their application, in which high quality teaching motivates students to achieve their full potential. The teaching is informed by the research and scholarship of teaching staff.
- To build on the existing knowledge, abilities and skills of all students, and to develop a deeper understanding of economic theory, empirical analysis and policy applications in their relation to Development Economics.
- To provide options to enable students to study selected areas of Development Economics in depth.
Careers
A postgraduate degree in the area of economics is a particularly valuable and flexible qualification that can open the door to exciting careers in many professions. Our graduates have gone on to work as economists in international organisations, the financial sector, business, UK and overseas governments, and to further postgraduate training and academic careers at Kent, UK and overseas universities. Recent MSc graduates have gone on to work for companies in the UK such as BNP Paribas, AXA, FactSet and PwC.

為來自中國的學(xué)生設(shè)計 For entry to a Kent postgraduate degree programme (Master’s), Chinese students typically need to have completed a Bachelor Degree (Xueshi) at a recognised institution. Exact requirements will depend on the postgraduate degree you are applying for and the undergraduate degree you have studied. For programmes that require a 2:1 we usually ask for a Bachelor degree (Xueshi) from a 211 university with a final grade of 70%. For Bachelor degrees from other recognised institutions you will need to achieve a final grade of 75%. For programmes that require a 2:2 we usually ask for a Bachelor degree (Xueshi) from a 211 university with a final grade of 65%. For Bachelor degrees from other recognised institutions you will need to achieve a final grade of 70%. Applicants with relevant work experience may be considered with lower grades. Some, but not all, postgraduate programmes require your undergraduate degree to have a related major. Some postgraduate programmes may require work experience in a relevant field or at a certain level. For MBA, Students who wish to apply for a higher degree should have a good honours degree from the UK (minimum 2:2) or equivalent internationally recognised qualification. Exceptions will be considered for senior managers with more than ten years’ managerial work experience. Students need to have an IELTS score of 6.5 overall (with a minimum of 6.0 in R&W; 5.5 in S&L).
