Overview
Our Quantity Surveying course will give you all the skills and knowledge necessary to become a successful quantity surveyor. Quantity Surveying provides clients of the construction industry with financial, contractual and technical advice ensuring they get value for money from the buildings they construct. The modern quantity surveyor is a construction professional who may be involved at all stages of the design and construction process, from providing business strategy and advice, working with architects and design team consultants, through to overseeing the onsite construction phase.
While studying Quantity Surveying at Heriot-Watt you will learn the fundamental elements of building before focusing on QS practice and learning how to manage the cost, legal and economic elements.
Accreditation
Our Quantity Surveying degree is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) for the purpose of graduate membership.
Teaching and Learning
The Construction Management and Surveying Programme provides a flexible, student-centred, and resource-based learning and teaching environment, which actively promotes a deep approach to learning. At each stage, learning and teaching resources include lectures, tutorials, seminars, workshops and task-based activities. As the Programme progresses, the emphasis switches from group based lectures to individual student-led tutorials and small group self learning activities, and students are encouraged to take greater responsibility for their own learning. The techniques adopted include library and computer-based facilities, specific project based courses designed to integrate the knowledge based covered at each stage and develop transferable skills, directed reading, case studies, dissertations, Coursework and problem-solving classes.
Assessment
The assessment policy for Programmes in the Construction Management and Surveying Programme is to tailor the methods of assessment to the subject being taught and the nature of the classes so that understanding, knowledge and subject-specific skills are assessed using a variety of approaches. These include essays, reports, written examinations, practical exercises, presentations, group and individual projects and the dissertation. What is best for each course is moderated by seeking a balance of modes within terms and stages.
