Overview
The psychology component of the course (75% of the curriculum) covers the discipline’s main areas, namely social psychology, developmental psychology, cognitive psychology, biological psychology, individual differences, and research methods, and emphasises their application to various employment-related contexts. The management component (25%) of the course introduces (and allows specialism within) marketing, human resource management, finance, and management.
Teaching is mainly via lectures, but large numbers of tutorials mean that staff and students know one another well. Assessment features a mixture of coursework and examination.
Accreditation
Accredited against the requirements for the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) of the British Psychological Society (BPS).
The course aims to provide subject-specific knowledge, skills in critical analysis, and other transferable skills. In addition to this, the BSc Psychology with Management prepares final year students for entry to postgraduate courses in professional psychology and also management. Accordingly, teaching of subject-specific knowledge is organised around the accreditation criteria of the British Psychological Society, and includes all the core components stipulated by that body.
Teaching and Learning
The majority of teaching takes place via lectures, and formal essay-based examinations make up a substantial component of our assessment. In addition to these however, there is extensive use of VISION and other IT teaching materials, small group and one-on-one teaching sessions, student-led coursework that promotes the development of transferable skills, formative assessment in every course, prompt and unambiguous feedback, and career-oriented teaching.
Assessment
Formal, essay-based examinations constitute a substantive element of assessment. However a diversity of approaches is adopted. Across the four Stages of the programme can be found instances of formative assessment in each course, coursework involving essays and lab reports, verbal presentations, and other pieces of assessed work that are idiosyncratic to the particular learning goals of the course in question and which make extensive use of IT. The nonexamination-based assessment is student-led as much as, and whenever, possible.
