Overview
This Psychology degree will introduce you to the main disciplines of social, developmental, cognitive and biological psychology – plus individual differences and research methods. The course examines how this information can apply in the real world, in terms of general employment and careers in psychology. You’ll also have the opportunity to take optional courses from other subjects like biological sciences, management, or languages.
Teaching is mainly through lectures. But, this Psychology degree also includes lots of tutorials, which means that you can really get to know our staff. Assessment is a mixture of coursework and exams.
Accreditation
Our degree in Psychology is accredited against the requirements for the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) of the British Psychological Society (BPS).
The programme aims to provide subject-specific knowledge, skills in critical analysis, and other transferable skills. In addition to this, BSc Psychology prepares final year students for entry to postgraduate courses in professional psychology. Accordingly, teaching of subject-specific knowledge is organised around the accreditation criteria of the British Psychological Society, and includes all the core components stipulated at present.
Teaching and Learning
The majority of teaching takes place via lectures, and formal essay-based examinations make up a substantial component of our assessment. In addition to these, however, there is extensive use of VISION and other IT teaching materials, small group and one-on-one teaching sessions, student-led coursework that promotes the development of transferable skills, formative assessment of discourse-focused written work, prompt and unambiguous feedback, and career-oriented teaching.
Assessment
Formal, essay-based examinations constitute a substantive element of assessment. However a diversity of approaches is adopted. Across the four Stages of the programme can be found instances of formative assessment, coursework involving essays and lab reports, verbal presentations, and other pieces of assessed work that are idiosyncratic to the particular learning goals of the course in question and which make extensive use of IT. The non-examination-based assessment is student-led as much as, and whenever, possible.
