Why choose this course
With the continual development of modern medicine and the availability of treatments, we’re seeing a rise in the number of antibiotic resistant microbes, and the emergence and re-emergence of infectious diseases. To effectively research and overcome these challenges, there’s a call for medical microbiologists, who are equipped with advanced skills and knowledge.
On this course, we’ll give you the tools to begin a successful career as a Medical Microbiologist, increasing your scientific understanding of medical microbiology and developing your critical analysis, management, and independent research skills.
What you will study
You’ll learn about the biological and pathogenic properties of microbes, which are important to our health, as well as those which can cause disease. You'll investigate how the human body reacts to infection and how to detect, control and treat infectious disease. You’ll study topics, including antimicrobial agents, chemotherapy, epidemiology, immunology, and microbial genetics.
You’ll also get the opportunity to work alongside a supervisor to conduct your own laboratory-based scientific research project. Throughout the project, you’ll identify problems, formulate hypotheses, design experiments, acquire and interpret data, and draw conclusions.
Careers and graduate prospects
We offer careers information, advice and guidance to all students whilst studying with us, which is extended to our alumni for three years after leaving the University.
**** of our graduates from this course go on to full-time employment or further study. Our alumni take on roles as technologists and quality control officers within the pharmaceutical industry. Many of our graduates also go on to complete a PhD, investigating an area of personal interest.
