Develop your writing potential and gain the skills and expertise to become an adaptive creative writing professional.
You will explore narrative-driven works, experimental innovations, editing, creative nonfiction and script writing, as well as current approaches to poetry and short and extended fiction writing.
During the course you will have opportunities to engage in writing and editing for current new media publications including Deakin’s own Verandah Literary Journal. You can also gain a competitive edge through internships in magazine and book publishing houses, and within broadcast and print media. These experiences help you to develop important industry connections and drive your creative practice forward.
You will learn how to manage a creative project from concept through to research and execution, and produce professional-standard publications for web and print. With an emphasis on collaboration, professionalism and creative sustainability, the course prepares you to seamlessly transition into employment after graduating.
Course structure
Students must complete 24 credit points as follows:
- 18 credit points of compulsory core units
- 6 credit points of elective units
- no more than 10 credit points at level 1
- Academic Integrity AAI018
- Academic Integrity (0-credit-point compulsory unit)
Career outcomes
As a creative writing graduate, you will have the practical skills to work with interdisciplinary teams in writing, film, drama and new technologies.

You may also choose to transition into fourth-year solo projects in Deakin's selective Honors program, or postgraduate studies in creative writing research and production.
