The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultural Studies is dedicated to the study of the civilizations of China, Japan, and Korea in all their richness and diversity. Study involves not only East Asia's recent and increasingly vital role on the world scene, but also an examination of the complex and profound features of its long history. The focus is on the humanistic traditions, with particular emphasis on literature, history, religion, society, and cultural studies. The program stresses advanced language training as the foundation for research on East Asian cultures. Coursework concentrates on history, literature, religious studies, anthropology, and applied linguistics.
Program Learning Outcomes
Upon graduation with a MA in Asian Studies:
Core Knowledge
Students will be able to:
- Demonstrate proficiency in Chinese or Japanese.
- Demonstrate general knowledge of East Asian cultures.
- Demonstrate specialized knowledge of bibliographical, methodological, and theoretical issues in a sub-field of East Asian studies, including but not limited to history, literature, religious studies, anthropology, linguistics and the arts, as well as social and cultural anthropology and sociology.
Research Methods and Analysis
Students should be able to:
- Target and conduct research in a sub-field in the academic study of East Asia.
- Master the range of methodological and theoretical issues adopted in the sub-field.
- Conduct original research using sources in Chinese, or Japanese.
Scholarly Communication
Students will be able to:
- Make a coherent academic argument that presents and evaluates evidence to support claims.
- Cogently review, analyze, and synthesize relevant literature.
- Write in a level and style of English consistent with that found in leading academic journals.
- Follow proper styles of scholarly documentation, such as citing, referencing, and formatting found in East Asian research outlets.
- Make clear and cogent oral presentations on academic occasions, such as conferences and classrooms.
Professionalism
Students will be able to:
Make effective contributions to professional service outside academia, such as government services that require knowledge and skills related to East Asia.
