The Department of Sociology stresses diversity and innovation in its approach to research and learning, and seeks to be a center of rigorous, sophisticated, and inspired searches for knowledge of social life. Department faculty members are among the best in the nation in the following areas:

Ph.D. students can add an emphasis in: Black Studies, Demography, Environment & Society, Feminist Studies, Global Studies, Language, Interaction and Social Organization, Quantitative Methods in the Social Sciences, and Technology & Society.
