Our MSc Health Research can be studied either on a full-time basis over 1 year, or via modular, credit accumulation which would take between 2 and 5 years.

This course offers advanced training in key methodological and theoretical aspects of health-related research from a social scientific perspective. During your studies you will combine perspectives from sociological and health research methods, enabling you to investigate complex health related issues using both quantitative and qualitative methods

The course includes opportunities to learn from experienced staff in the School of Health and Social Care and the Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER). Modules on statistical analysis and survey design will develop your quantitative research and analysis skills, including training with statistical analysis packages e.g. STATA

.This will be complemented by modules on qualitative heath research and theory in health research. You will also have the option of completing a placement within a research institution to gain valuable work experience. Overall you will leave the course with a combination of practical research skills, the ability to collect, analyse and interpret data, along with a theoretical understanding of health research that will enable you to ask and explore important sociological and health related questions.

This programme should be of interest if you wish to pursue a career in health-related research, or employment in health related governmental and non-governmental organisations, or to pursue further postgraduate study to doctoral level.

The programme is also an appropriate continuing professional development option for health and social care professionals who are interested in making research part of their future career. Because the course can be taken on a modular basis it can be completed whilst in full-time employment.
