Develop practical and theoretical skills across all areas of chemistry, ready to tackle major challenges and leading to a range of careers.
As a chemist, you can move seamlessly between areas such as sustainable chemistry, drug development and materials. This course has the broadest range of subjects of all our chemistry courses.
In the first two years, you’ll study a broad introduction to all areas of chemistry, where you’ll gain the practical and theoretical skills needed to design experiments and test hypotheses. This includes understanding the theories of chemical behaviour and how they are applied. You will also develop skills in experimental chemistry and in designing experiments to test hypotheses.
You can specialise in a particular field in later years through optional units and a final year project. You’ll draw upon the expertise of academics in the Department and could even contribute to the world-leading research being carried out. There will also be opportunities for you to put your chemistry knowledge into practice in research laboratories and other professional environments outside the University.
The Master of Chemistry (MChem) provides you with the same core skills and knowledge of the bachelor’s but with a greater exposure to research and advanced practical techniques, including a major research project throughout the final year.
Placement
Going on placement gives you the opportunity to apply your skills and knowledge to a year working in industry. You’ll be employed full-time in a role to match your future career ambitions, broadening your experience and transferable skills. This could give you a competitive edge when applying for graduate jobs.
