Students admitted to the five-year program complete all requirements for a Bachelor of Music degree in music performance and a Master of Music degree in music education. The receipt of both degrees normally qualifies a student for Initial Teacher Licensure in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
A student who is interested in this program and has been admitted to the Bachelor of Music degree in vocal or instrumental performance may contact the program advisor, Dr. Diana Dansereau. Official admission to the program occurs during the sophomore year, but the student can begin adding music education courses gradually to the performance degree program starting in the freshman year.
A student admitted to the five-year program typically finishes the Bachelor of Music degree in the fourth year, then s/he enrolls for the student teaching practicum, graduate theory, graduate musicology, and the capstone music education course in the fifth year. Advantages to the five-year program include not only the receipt of an advanced degree, but also opportunities opened up in the undergraduate program for practice and public performance.
