Focussing on both creative process and creative output across all forms of writing, this degree combines the core elements of writing technique with industry practice, critical thinking and collaborative learning. Taught by a team of experienced writers, publishers, scholars and industry professionals, this course will prepare the student for a wide range of careers and opportunities, including writing and editing, story developing and world building, teaching and researching, and other industries where writing and communicating lie at the heart of the role.
Students gain practical experience and theoretical engagement in the discipline of contemporary creative writing. They apply their skills across a number of key genres and narrative forms. An emphasis on critical skills leading towards the development of independent writing projects prepares students for professional practice.
Course aims
The aims of this degree are:
- to produce graduates with a strong grounding in, and full knowledge of, contemporary writing practices and the writing industry,
- to provide students with the opportunity to explore a range of literary and commercial writing forms and genres, and
- to enable students to gain creative and critical skills, aptitudes and experiences that ensure they are ready for work and/or further study.
Course structure
Students must complete 144 credit points consisting of 24 credit points of core subjects, a 48-credit-point major and potential 48-credit-point second major (subject to application), and 24 credit points of cross-disciplinary electives. Students who do not meet the requirements to study the second major complete elective subjects.
Careers
Graduates work as fiction and non-fiction writers in anthologies, magazines and newspapers, and for literary journals and online presses. They also work as screenwriters, story developers and communication professionals. Graduates also become teachers and researchers, many undertaking postgraduate study.

Award of the full International Baccalaureate Diploma where the total aggregate score including bonus and penalty points meets entry standard. Academic IELTS: 6.5 overall with a writing score of 6.0; TOEFL (Internet-based): 79 - 93 overall, writing 21; PTE: 58-64; CAE: 176-184; AE5/AE6 (PASS): AE5.
