The MSSW/MA with Major in Latin American Studies prepares students to fill human service positions that demand clinical knowledge and skills as well as the cultural and linguistic competency required when working with Latino populations and Latin American immigrant populations in the United States.
Students interested in pursuing this degree may choose either the Clinical or the Administration and Policy Practice (APP) concentration in social work.
The program is designed so that students can earn an MSSW and MA degree in three years rather than the four years required completing the two degrees independently. Download the program of work here (PDF).
Graduates of the dual degree will understand the political, social, and economic challenges and successes of Latin America. The students will acquire vital contextual and applied knowledge through their course work. They will also experience on-the-ground conditions in Latin American countries as well as acquire superlative language skills through their field research. Graduates of the dual degree program will learn about the different organizational strategies that characterize various human service agencies and will be qualified to provide much needed culturally sensitive, bilingual services in the delivery of programs and when working with clients from diverse Latin American regions and cultural backgrounds.
