The goal of graduate study at The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy is to develop the intellectual breadth and specialized training necessary for a career in teaching, research or advanced professional practice. Emphasis is placed on the knowledge, methods and skills needed for scholarly teaching; original research and problem solving; intellectual leadership; creative expression; and professional prominence and recognition.
M.S. Programs
Courses of study leading to a Master of Science degree are only offered in pharmacotherapy and in health outcomes and pharmacy practice. Each graduate student’s course of study may be uniquely tailored to meet the specific learning objectives of the student. Pharmacotherapy Division
The Masters Program is designed to be the “terminal” degree for the advanced practice clinician who brings science to practice. The maturation of clinical pharmacy and the widespread adoption of pharmaceutical care as the cornerstone of pharmacy practice are evidenced by changes in standards and regulations. Collaborative drug therapy practice in Texas and in over 30 other states, allows pharmacists to assume primary care responsibilities for patients (e.g., disease management and the ordering of medications and laboratory tests).
Health Outcomes and Pharmacy Practice Division
The focus of research and teaching in the Health Outcomes & Pharmacy Practice Division is on improving the health of society. The division fosters opportunities for collaboration among faculty within and outside of the division in both teaching and research activities, particularly those that are practice-related. Topics related to utilization and cost of medication and other health care services, patient behaviors and outcomes, pharmacoeconomics, pharmacoepidemiology, and practice-based research are covered.
