The mission of the undergraduate program in Architecture is to develop basic skills, knowledge, and methods of inquiry in the discipline of architecture within the context of a liberal education in the arts and sciences. Faculty in the School of Design and the SAS teach the required courses in the Major and Minor in Architecture. The Major in Architecture includes courses in design, history, and theory of architecture. Student work in the design studios ranges from hand drawing and three-dimensional physical models to three-dimensional parametric modeling and 3D-printing.
There are two possible concentrations in the undergraduate Major in Architecture: Design (16 cu) and History, Theory and Criticism (14 cu). The required courses in Architecture in the Design concentration are ARCH 102 (1 cu), ARCH 201 (1.5 cu), ARCH 202 (1.5 cu), ARCH 301 (2 cu), ARCH 302 (2 cu), ARCH 312 (1 cu), ARCH 401 (2 cu), and ARCH 411 (1 cu). The required courses in the History of Art in the Design concentration are ARTH 102, ARTH 106, ARTH 281, and one ARTH 200-500 level course.
The required courses in Architecture in the History, Theory, and Criticism concentration are ARCH 102, ARCH 201 (1.5 cu), ARCH 202 (1.5 cu), ARCH 301 (2 cu), ARCH 312, and ARCH 411. The required courses in the History of Art in the History, Theory, and Criticism concentration are ARTH 102, ARTH 106, ARTH 281, ARTH 301, ARTH 398, and one ARTH 200-500 level course.
