The Master of Laws (LLM) is the flagship degree in the world-renowned Melbourne Law Masters program, offering students a choice of over 180 subjects in 25 specialist legal areas.
It’s available only for law graduates and the flexible structure makes it ideal for working professionals looking to immerse themselves in selected areas of the law.
As an LLM student, you can choose from all subjects available in the Melbourne Law Masters program, allowing you to tailor the degree to suit your professional aspirations and personal interests. You can also choose to undertake the degree as a combination of coursework and a minor thesis.
Course Structure
The course requires satisfactory completion of 100 credit points from subjects available in the Melbourne Law Masters. Students who have a law degree that is not from a common law jurisdiction are required to complete Fundamentals of the Common Law.
The Master of Laws (LLM) is for those who already hold a degree in law and are looking to develop their expertise.
It’s ideal for professionals wanting to advance their careers by honing their legal and research skills and become a specialist in their area of interest.
As an LLM student, you’ll develop skills in critical analysis and the ability to interpret and transmit your ideas to specialist and non-specialist audiences.

English language requirements for Coursework degree: IELTS (academic English Only) - 6.5 overall, with written 6.5 and no band less than 6.0; TOEFL (paper-based test) - 577 + TWE 4.5; TOEFL (internet-based test) - 79 + (Writing 21; Speaking 18; Reading 13; Listening 13); Pearson Test of English (Academic) - 58 + no other communicative skill below 50; Cambridge English: Advanced/ Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) - 176 + no less than 185 in Writing and 169 in each other skill. English language requirements for Master of Philosophy: IELTS (academic English Only) - 7.0 overall, with written 7 and no band less than 6.0; TOEFL (paper-based test) - 600 + TWE 5.0; TOEFL (internet-based test) - 94 + (Writing 27; Speaking 18; Reading 13; Listening 13); Pearson Test of English (Academic) - 65 + written communicative skill of 65 and no other communicative skill below 50; Cambridge English: Advanced/ Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) - 185 + no less than 185 in Writing and 169 in each other skill.
