The Master of International Tax (MIntTax) is a globally-recognised specialist tax qualification that equips you for the practice of taxation law in a rapidly changing economic world.
It’s ideal for tax professionals, academics, government officials and those planning a career in tax law, whether from Australia or internationally, in which international taxation will play a key role.
As a student, you can choose from a substantial selection of international and comparative tax subjects, as well as a range of subjects from Melbourne Law School’s broader tax and commercial law programs. All subjects are taught by leading international or Australian tax experts with significant reputations in the field of international tax.
Course Structure
Students in the Master of International Tax must complete seven subjects in addition to Foundations of Tax Law, including at least five subjects from the prescribed list. Up to two subjects may be selected from the subjects offered in the Master of Tax or Master of Commercial Law.
As a student in the Master of International Tax, you’ll develop an advanced and integrated understanding of the complex body of knowledge in the field of international tax including:
- The rules that apply to residents deriving foreign source income and non-residents driving Australian source income
- The design of tax systems in a global economy and the interaction of the tax rules of sovereign countries
- The role of bi-lateral treaties between trading partners and the ability of one country to influence outcomes
- The role of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development and the United Nations in developing bi-lateral treaties
- Current debates on the applicability of existing corporate and international tax systems and proposed solutions.

English language requirements for Coursework degree: IELTS (academic English Only) - 6.5 overall, with written 6.5 and no band less than 6.0; TOEFL (paper-based test) - 577 + TWE 4.5; TOEFL (internet-based test) - 79 + (Writing 21; Speaking 18; Reading 13; Listening 13); Pearson Test of English (Academic) - 58 + no other communicative skill below 50; Cambridge English: Advanced/ Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) - 176 + no less than 185 in Writing and 169 in each other skill. English language requirements for Master of Philosophy: IELTS (academic English Only) - 7.0 overall, with written 7 and no band less than 6.0; TOEFL (paper-based test) - 600 + TWE 5.0; TOEFL (internet-based test) - 94 + (Writing 27; Speaking 18; Reading 13; Listening 13); Pearson Test of English (Academic) - 65 + written communicative skill of 65 and no other communicative skill below 50; Cambridge English: Advanced/ Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) - 185 + no less than 185 in Writing and 169 in each other skill.
