Reimagine our future cities with the Master of Engineering (Civil with Business) at Australia’s leading university*. Learn to design, plan and construct the advanced infrastructure required to handle increasing populations, finite resources and extreme events.
Course structure
FIRST YEAR
In your first year (or equivalent) you’ll complete foundation engineering subjects – tailored to students from a non-engineering background. If you’ve completed the Civil Systems major in your bachelor’s degree, plus the required maths and science subjects, you’ll receive credit for these foundation engineering subjects and start in second year.
SECOND AND THIRD YEAR
In the second and third year (or equivalent), you’ll focus on your chosen engineering discipline. As a civil engineering student your focus will be on sustainable urban developments, environmental protection and the conservation of energy and water resources. You’ll also gain knowledge in structural, geotechnical, hydraulic and transportation engineering.
You’ll undertake an industry, design or research project and gain the skills and knowledge to practice as a professional engineer.
BUSINESS STUDY
Develop key business skills though subjects that have been tailored to the engineering profession and co-developed with Melbourne Business School. Take five subjects in areas including engineering management, contracts and procurement, economic analysis, strategy execution, and marketing.
Careers
As a civil engineer, you could work in urban development, transport and infrastructure, water resources and mining.

English language requirements for Coursework degree: IELTS (academic English Only) - 6.5 overall, with written 6.5 and no band less than 6.0; TOEFL (paper-based test) - 577 + TWE 4.5; TOEFL (internet-based test) - 79 + (Writing 21; Speaking 18; Reading 13; Listening 13); Pearson Test of English (Academic) - 58 + no other communicative skill below 50; Cambridge English: Advanced/ Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) - 176 + no less than 185 in Writing and 169 in each other skill. English language requirements for Master of Philosophy: IELTS (academic English Only) - 7.0 overall, with written 7 and no band less than 6.0; TOEFL (paper-based test) - 600 + TWE 5.0; TOEFL (internet-based test) - 94 + (Writing 27; Speaking 18; Reading 13; Listening 13); Pearson Test of English (Academic) - 65 + written communicative skill of 65 and no other communicative skill below 50; Cambridge English: Advanced/ Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) - 185 + no less than 185 in Writing and 169 in each other skill.
