Business and engineering: a powerful combined skillset

Be guided by academics in bionics, human movement, prosthetics and tissue engineering who have worked on ground-breaking innovations including: the bionic eye, implants to help control epilepsy, using virtual reality to treat real-world injuries and tissue regeneration for patients recovering from breast cancer.

Get involved with industry projects, attend site visits at the Parkville medical precinct and focus on real-world problem-based challenges with industry mentors.

Course structure

FIRST YEAR

In your first year (or equivalent) you’ll complete foundation engineering subjects – tailored to students from a non-engineering background. If you’ve completed the Bioengineering Systems major in your bachelor degree, plus the required maths and science subjects, you’ll receive credit for these foundation engineering subjects and start in second year.

SECOND AND THIRD YEAR

In your second and third year (or equivalent), you’ll focus on your chosen engineering discipline. As a biomedical engineering student, you will learn about human systems and the design and operation of devices and processes that can be applied to new medical treatments, instruments and machines.

Careers

As a biomedical engineer, you could work in a range of fields such as biotechnology, health services, medical devices and pharmaceuticals.

You’ll gain a transferable skillset that will be highly valued in management consulting, finance, business analysis, project management and many other areas.

English language requirements for Coursework degree: IELTS (academic English Only) - 6.5 overall, with written 6.5 and no band less than 6.0; TOEFL (paper-based test) - 577 + TWE 4.5; TOEFL (internet-based test) - 79 + (Writing 21; Speaking 18; Reading 13; Listening 13); Pearson Test of English (Academic) - 58 + no other communicative skill below 50; Cambridge English: Advanced/ Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) - 176 + no less than 185 in Writing and 169 in each other skill. English language requirements for Master of Philosophy: IELTS (academic English Only) - 7.0 overall, with written 7 and no band less than 6.0; TOEFL (paper-based test) - 600 + TWE 5.0; TOEFL (internet-based test) - 94 + (Writing 27; Speaking 18; Reading 13; Listening 13); Pearson Test of English (Academic) - 65 + written communicative skill of 65 and no other communicative skill below 50; Cambridge English: Advanced/ Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) - 185 + no less than 185 in Writing and 169 in each other skill.
