The Master of Design for Performance offers you the skills, knowledge, and experience in designing scenery, props, costumes and/or lighting for live performance, including theatre, dance and opera.
This structured coursework program provides you with an enriched and comprehensive pathway into the profession encompassing formal classes, workshops and studio-based learning where you will explore the role of design in performance. Through industry internships and designing VCA productions you will gain experience in a variety of live performance forms and develop a portfolio of work that may include theatre, dance, and music theatre.
A core principle of the program is that collaboration is at the heart of design for performance. In developing this skill, you will interact with other performance makers, in particular Directors, Choreographers, and other Designers. As such this course also provides a unique opportunity to develop creative partnerships that can lead to future collaborations in the profession.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this course, graduates will have developed:
- Advanced technical and creative skills and understanding in design
- Knowledge of theoretical frameworks to evaluate and critique specific elements used in the development of a performance, including but not limited to design
- A capacity to evaluate, discriminate and make informed choices within both a pragmatic and artistic framework, as a senior member of the collaborative team
- Abilities to collaborate with other members of the design and performance team
- An understanding and exploration of the performing arts as a communicative mode and of the potentials of diverse media in performance.

English language requirements for Coursework degree: IELTS (academic English Only) - 6.5 overall, with written 6.5 and no band less than 6.0; TOEFL (paper-based test) - 577 + TWE 4.5; TOEFL (internet-based test) - 79 + (Writing 21; Speaking 18; Reading 13; Listening 13); Pearson Test of English (Academic) - 58 + no other communicative skill below 50; Cambridge English: Advanced/ Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) - 176 + no less than 185 in Writing and 169 in each other skill. English language requirements for Master of Philosophy: IELTS (academic English Only) - 7.0 overall, with written 7 and no band less than 6.0; TOEFL (paper-based test) - 600 + TWE 5.0; TOEFL (internet-based test) - 94 + (Writing 27; Speaking 18; Reading 13; Listening 13); Pearson Test of English (Academic) - 65 + written communicative skill of 65 and no other communicative skill below 50; Cambridge English: Advanced/ Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) - 185 + no less than 185 in Writing and 169 in each other skill.
