The Master of Biomedical Science at the University of Melbourne is a coursework master’s degree incorporating a substantial research project.
This program is an alternative to the Honours to PhD pathway. Students undertake a major research project and discipline-specific coursework subjects. In addition, a suite of professional business and communication subjects are offered to complement and enhance the research undertaken and to progress students’ career opportunities.
The Master of Biomedical Science offers graduates a pathway into a research, other science-based careers or PhD studies.
The objectives of this course are to provide students with skills in:
- Conducting research in biomedical and health science
- Designing experiments
- Managing a research projects
- Preparing and giving an oral and written presentation of the results
- Expressing intellectual, scientific arguments; and
- Assimilating and critically evaluating existing knowledge within a scientific paradigm
The Master of Biomedical Science is a coursework degree and students must complete 200 credit points comprising:
- Discipline subjects (50 credit points)
- Professional skills subjects (25 credit points)
- Research subject (125 credit points)

English language requirements for Coursework degree: IELTS (academic English Only) - 6.5 overall, with written 6.5 and no band less than 6.0; TOEFL (paper-based test) - 577 + TWE 4.5; TOEFL (internet-based test) - 79 + (Writing 21; Speaking 18; Reading 13; Listening 13); Pearson Test of English (Academic) - 58 + no other communicative skill below 50; Cambridge English: Advanced/ Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) - 176 + no less than 185 in Writing and 169 in each other skill. English language requirements for Master of Philosophy: IELTS (academic English Only) - 7.0 overall, with written 7 and no band less than 6.0; TOEFL (paper-based test) - 600 + TWE 5.0; TOEFL (internet-based test) - 94 + (Writing 27; Speaking 18; Reading 13; Listening 13); Pearson Test of English (Academic) - 65 + written communicative skill of 65 and no other communicative skill below 50; Cambridge English: Advanced/ Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) - 185 + no less than 185 in Writing and 169 in each other skill.
