My name is Stephen. I fell in love with China many years ago, and was
able to realize my dream to come here in 2009, when I had the privilege
of being a member of the Irish contingent in the Hanyu Qiao. What an
experience! It cemented the love I have for this country and opened my
eyes to the warm hearts and good natures of the Chinese people! It is a
joy to work with all my colleagues in N.D. I., and I hope to be able to
contribute as much as I can to the English language learners here in
Harbin. It is a pleasure to teach the many students here, who are all

My name is Carl. I originally planned to spend 1 year in China, I
thought the experience would be a good thing. All that changed when I
arrived! I fell in love with China and have been here ever since.
Teaching has become the career that I hadn’t expected. I feel very

My name is Emma; I was born in Perth on the west coast of Australia.
After I completed my degree I started studying Chinese in my spare time
and took the opportunity to immerse myself in the language by moving to
China and teaching English at NDI in 2014. So now I have been teaching
English in Harbin for over half a year, enjoying the refreshing winters
that drop below -30 and the toasty lively summers that go up past 30 in
the shade of the beer gardens which litter the streets of Harbin with a
bustling friendly community. Teaching English here is an immensely
rewarding experience as you get to assist students in improving their
English and by extension fulfilling their ambitions to further their
studies, careers or traveling endeavors. Experiencing cultural exchange
opens the eyes of both teacher and student to the intricacies of life
and differences in attitudes and values that allow for a personal growth
and understanding that is truly priceless.

I was born and raised in Wisconsin, USA, though while abroad I tell
people I am from "near Chicago". I received higher education in several
foreign languages and Linguistics at the University of Chicago and the
University of Wisconsin Madison, where I received a B.A. But I will tell
you that I got my true education from my somewhat random travels and
occupations. This is my second tour of the P.R.C, having spent a year
teaching English in Qingdao. I swear that Wuhan is much better than
Qingdao, but I still haven't survived a Wuhan summer. I enjoy teaching
English, but I cry myself to sleep after hearing "because..., so..."
sentences. One or the other, my dear students! My hobbies are: film,
literature, juggling, and sewing. My other interests include: Travellin'
(travellin' all alone), gloomy Sundays, sailboats in the moonlight, and
anything else that ever made it into a Billie Holiday song.

I have been teaching English as a second or foreign language non-stop
since 1988, when I was a teaching assistant at two high schools in
Germany. During all these years I have taught students from over 45
countries and all walks of life. Getting to know my students and their
cultures for me is one of the best parts of teaching; the other is the
continual interaction with the astonishingly complex English language.
In my free time I enjoy traveling when I have money, and relaxing at
home when I don’t. I always have at least one book in my bag and another
on my bedside table. When I get old I plan to retire to the country and
